How to Create Merch People Actually Want to Keep
We’ve all gotten it. The company swag that gets tossed in a drawer, forgotten at the office or donated before it ever gets used.
But branded merch doesn’t have to feel like an obligation.
When it’s thoughtful, well-designed and chosen with the recipient in mind, merch can become something people genuinely want to wear, use and keep. And when that happens, your brand gets to be part of their everyday life, not just another logo on another product.
So, what separates the good stuff from the forgettable stuff?
Start with the person, not the product
Before asking “What should we put our logo on?” ask “Who are we giving this to?”
Think about your audience beyond their job title. Are they frequent travelers? Commuters? Parents? Coffee people? Homebodies? Always on the go?
The better you understand how your recipients actually live, the easier it becomes to choose merchandise that makes sense for them.
A great gift doesn’t just check a box. It fits naturally into someone's routine.
Think retail, not promotional
If you wouldn’t pick it up in a store, there’s a good chance your
employees or clients wouldn’t either.
Look for products with the same qualities you’d expect from something you were buying for yourself: good design, quality materials, recognizable brands and details that make the item feel intentional.
That might mean investing in one really great piece of apparel instead of several lower-cost items or choosing a premium everyday essential over something that exists solely because there was space for a logo.
Fewer, better things can make a much bigger impression.
Make the branding part of the design
Branded merchandise doesn't have to scream your company name from across the room.
Sometimes the best branding is the kind you have to look a little closer to notice.
Think tone-on-tone embroidery, subtle logo placements, custom patterns, branded details or colors that connect back to your identity without taking over the product.
The goal is to create something people want to use because it looks good, with your brand naturally built into the experience.
Think beyond the workday
Some of the best company merch has almost nothing to do with sitting at a desk.
Think about where your people are going after they log off. A great weekender for their next trip. A jacket they'll reach for on the weekend. A cooler for summer plans. A blanket that lives on their couch. A tumbler that becomes their everyday coffee cup.
When you choose merchandise for the whole person rather than just the employee, you open up a lot more possibilities.
Give it a reason to exist
Not every moment needs merch just for the sake of having merch.
Consider what you actually want the recipient to feel.
Welcomed. Appreciated. Celebrated. Connected. Excited.
A new hire kit should feel different from an anniversary gift. An event giveaway shouldn't necessarily look like an executive gift. And a holiday gift shouldn't feel like something pulled from the company store at the last minute.
Starting with the why makes it much easier to figure out the what.
Create an experience, not just an item
The product matters, but so does everything around it.
Thoughtful packaging, personalization, a handwritten message, an unexpected unboxing moment or even giving recipients the ability to choose their own gift can turn merchandise into an experience.
Those details tell people there was thought behind what they received.
And ultimately, that's what makes great merch work.
It doesn't feel like something a company ordered in bulk. It feels like something someone actually chose for you.
